San Antonio Spurs Case Study

Team Overview

In their 33 NBA seasons, the San Antonio Spurs have become one of the winningest franchises in the history of professional basketball. Since 1976, the Spurs have captured 17 division titles, and won four NBA championships. The team currently ranks third among active franchises for the highest winning percentage in NBA history and has only missed the playoffs four times as an NBA franchise.

Problem

Rather than promoting the team solely through mass e-mails, social media or advertised offers, the Spurs sought after another way to reach fans who are frequently inundated by the massive volume of marketing messages that they receive on a daily basis.

"Considering the amount of messages that the average fan receives every day, you need to find ways that will create a meaningful and memorable connection," said Rebecca Caven, director of guest services for the Spurs. "We needed an effective communication tool that would offer a fresh approach to getting information to our customers so we could cut through some of the everyday clutter.

Solution

The Spurs have used Call-Em-All for various promotions during the past two years—issuing calls from star forward, Richard Jefferson, three-time NBA All-Star, Tony Parker, and first-round draft pick, James Anderson, the day after the 2010 draft. Recently the Spurs decided once more to tap into the Call-Em-All voice messaging platform. This time, however, the Spurs enlisted the help of iconic head coach, Gregg Popovich.

Recording the message using Call-Em-All was easy. "Coach Pop" logged into the Call- Em-All platform and recorded a 40-second call to rally fans for the upcoming season. The Spurs marketing team then imported its fan list and scheduled the call through the same platform.

"Given their busy schedules, it can be difficult to get coaches and players in front of the general public," said Caven. "But Call-Em-All is so simple to use that it takes just minutes to record a call that lets every fan hear the voice of their team. The enthusiasm and energy delivered through our coaches and players make a huge difference to any of our promotions – and it’s something that our fans love."
